Upper Eyelid Surgery vs. Lower Eyelid Surgery: What’s the Difference?

Eyelid surgery is one of the most common facial rejuvenation procedures, and it is often the first cosmetic procedure that patients choose. It is a relatively short operation with a shorter recovery period, and it can rejuvenate the area around your eyes, giving you a new, youthful look. An eyelid lift can really make a difference in restoring a natural and refreshed appearance to aging eyes.

Eyelid surgery can treat many different things, including:

  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds and disturbs the natural contour of the eyelid
  • Fatty deposits that appear as puffiness around the eyes
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles on the lower eyelid

The procedure is highly individualized, and Dr. Mucci will examine your needs during your initial consultation to create personalized solutions that will get you the results you are looking for. When it comes to your procedure, there are two types you can choose from: upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery. You may be wondering, what is the difference between the two?

Upper Eyelid Surgery

If you feel like your eyes always look tired or like you are unhappy or less alert, upper eyelid surgery may be the solution for you. Upper eyelid surgery is a good option for eyelids that seem to lack contour or obscure your upper eyelashes. Upper eyelid surgery can help to remove sagging, wrinkled skin on the upper eyelid to help restore a natural and youthful shape to your eyelids.

The procedure for upper eyelid surgery involves an incision in the natural crease above the eye. To make the desired improvements, Dr. Mucci will remove excess skin and fat from the eyelid and adjust the surrounding muscles. This gives your eyes a more open and refreshed appearance.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery is a good option for people who have puffy, sagging bags beneath their eyes that make it seem like they haven’t slept well. This appearance can be caused by herniated fat that collects beneath the eyes. Puffy lower eyelids can also make patients appear older than they really are.

For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is most often located on the outer edge of the lower eyelid, just beneath the eyelashes, or even inside the eyelid. Dr. Mucci will then remove or reposition fat to create a smooth and natural contour beneath the eyelid to get rid of bags under the eyes, creating a younger and more energetic appearance.

Why Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelids are some of the most delicate skin on the body, so signs of aging may appear around the eyes earlier than in other areas. We express so much of our emotion through our eyes, and drooping eyelids can make you appear tired or even sad. Eyelid surgery can help to counteract these changes, so you can look younger and more refreshed. When you see the results you hope for, your confidence in your appearance can be restored.
