Without further ado, here are some things to keep in mind when considering silicone versus saline implants:

Silicone implants are often said to feel more “natural.” Silicone implants have an outer shell that is filled with a cohesive silicone gel, acting more like a solid than their saline counterparts. Many patients say these feel most like natural breast tissue.

Saline implants generally look more round. While silicone implants may look more natural, saline implants have a round appearance which is most pronounced in thin women with modest breast tissue. For many, this is more desirable. At a consultation, a surgeon can show you pictures of these implants so that you can decide if they fit what you’re looking for.

Silicone implants are less likely to droop. Silicone implants are lighter than saline, making them less likely to droop or go through downward displacement due to gravity. If you’re already experiencing some downward displacement, you should note that saline implants will be especially likely to droop.

Size considerations. If you have moderately sized breasts (in the C-cup range) and are getting implants for larger ones, there will not be a large difference between silicone and saline implants. Conversely, if you have smaller amounts of breast tissue (A-cup range) and are going to a D-cup or larger, then silicone implants will seem considerably more natural.

Silicone is slightly more expensive. Though we strongly urge patients to consider expense last if at all possible (it is your body, after all), it must be noted that silicone implants do cost a little more than saline. While you shouldn’t choose on the basis of cost, it’s something to keep in mind when planning for the procedure.
