Common Questions People Have About
Post-Mastectomy Breast Reconstruction

Patients who have undergone a mastectomy or partial mastectomy and want to restore breast shape may be candidates. Dr. Mucci evaluates each patient individually based on medical history and reconstructive goals.

Options include:

  • Implant-based reconstruction
  • Autologous tissue reconstruction (using your own tissue)
  • Fat grafting

Dr. Mucci will discuss the best option for your body, health, and desired outcome.

Initial recovery is typically 1–2 weeks, with full recovery—including swelling resolution and final results—usually occurring in 4–6 weeks.

Some reconstruction techniques require drains to prevent fluid buildup. Dr. Mucci will provide specific instructions on care and removal.

  • Light activity: 1–2 weeks
  • Exercise & heavy lifting: 4–6 weeks or as cleared by Dr. Mucci

Dr. Mucci customizes each reconstruction to achieve natural-looking symmetry with your remaining or opposite breast.

Some patients may require staged procedures, such as tissue expanders followed by implants or additional fat grafting, to achieve optimal results. Dr. Mucci will outline your personalized surgical plan.

During your consultation, Dr. Mucci will review your medical history, discuss reconstructive options, explain expected results, and answer questions to create a customized surgical plan.

Post-Operative Instructions

These instructions are general guidelines. Your individualized care plan may differ, and Dr. Mucci or his team will provide detailed instructions for optimal healing.

General Safety & Comfort

  1. Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours after surgery or while taking pain medication.
  2. Drink plenty of fluids for the first 48 hours and maintain a balanced diet. Extra protein supports healing.
  3. Take medications exactly as prescribed.
  4. Avoid strenuous activity and lifting until cleared by Dr. Mucci. Limit arm movements for the first 2 weeks.
  5. Wear loose-fitting clothing that buttons or zips in the front.
  1. Keep your supportive garment on at all times, except when showering.
  2. If drains are present, follow Dr. Mucci’s instructions for removal and care. Some drainage is normal for 24–48 hours.
  3. Change gauze as needed. Leave Steri-Strips in place. Do not tape over open wounds.
  4. Apply ice packs to reduce swelling and discomfort for 48–72 hours, using 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off while awake.
