Common Questions People Have
About Breast Reduction
Patients with large or heavy breasts causing physical discomfort, skin irritation, or difficulty with exercise and daily activities are ideal candidates.
Dr. Mucci removes excess breast tissue and skin to reduce breast size. The nipple and areola may be repositioned for optimal placement. Incision patterns vary depending on the degree of reduction required.
Initial recovery usually takes about 1–2 weeks, with most patients returning to work during this period. Full recovery, including swelling resolution and final breast shape, can take 4–6 weeks.
Patients wear a support garment for 6 weeks, with light activity restrictions for the first 2–3 weeks. Follow Dr. Mucci’s instructions carefully for safe healing.
Breastfeeding may be affected depending on the surgical technique used. Dr. Mucci will discuss this during your consultation if future breastfeeding is important to you.
- Light activity: 1–2 weeks
- Exercise & heavy lifting: 4–6 weeks or as cleared by Dr. Mucci
Risks include infection, bleeding, changes in nipple sensation, scarring, asymmetry, or the potential need for revision surgery. Dr. Mucci will review these risks during consultation.
Dr. Mucci will review your medical history, examine your breasts, discuss incision options, expected results, and answer all questions to create a customized surgical plan.

- You may shower the next morning. Keep Steri-Strips or tape over the incisions in place until your follow-up visit.
- Apply ice to the breasts for 48–72 hours, using 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off while awake to reduce swelling and discomfort.
- If a drain is present, remove it according to Dr. Mucci’s instructions. Some drainage for 24–48 hours is normal.
- Change gauze as needed and leave Steri-Strips in place. Do not tape over open wounds; cover with dry gauze.
