At the time of your consultation, it is common to have concerns about the potential upcoming procedure.  Do not be afraid to ask questions!  Once surgery is done, there is no going back.

The most important question when at a consultation, is to ask what are your doctors’ qualifications are? Before having any type of cosmetic procedure done, make sure that your doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This certification requires rigorous standards that a surgeon must complete. Please be careful. There are many physicians doing cosmetic surgery that are not in anyway qualified; so make sure you are educated about your surgeon’s education.

Once you have confirmed that your surgeon is board certified, learn about your doctors’ background. Where did he attend medical school, how many years has he been practicing, etc. Additionally, make sure you ask your doctors for before and after pictures from patients who have had the procedure you are looking into, and are pleased with the results.

Another big question is the cost. Cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by insurances, so make sure that you know the total fees up front. Consulting multiple doctors to compare pricing is sometimes a good idea.  Any cosmetic surgery quote should include the surgeon fees, operating room expenses, anesthesia, materials, etc. Remember, if a surgeon offers a low rate on a procedure, they could be cutting corners on safety procedures or, there may be hidden fees that come up later. Make sure you have the open conversation with your doctor.
